PDF Page Count Algorithm December 2004
Nowadays, when doing a quick Internet search, I pretty much expect to find coding examples for just about any basic programming task. Therefore, I was surprised when I couldn't find code to determine the page count of PDF documents.

I've had to return to my old hacking ways (ie 'hacking' in its original sense). I visited my favorite hacking website - www.wotsit.org, downloaded the PDF document specifications and got coding.

It didn't take too long to construct a reasonably efficient algorithm which does what I want. I've thrown a few PDFs at it over the last couple of days so I hope I've squashed most of the bugs.

Update 21-Jul-2014:
Another minor bugfix

Update 9-Sep-2009:
The code snippet below now also compiles in Delphi XE2 (as well as in Delphi 7).

Update 19-Feb-2009:
I've created a small freeware pdfpagecount.dll file which exports the GetPdfPageCount() function. (See the 'readme.txt' file in ZIP archive for more info.)

Update 11-Feb-2009:
Major improvements to accommodate later versions of the PDF specification. As you'll see below what should be a simple task requires a massive amount of code (almost 1000 lines, and even then it's not a complete solution)!

Update 07-Mar-2007:
Another minor bugfix

Update 14-Apr-2007:
Added a workaround to handle strictly invalid pdf formats

Update 06-Mar-2007:
Another minor bugfix to parse nested dictionaries

Update 22-Dec-2005:
Yes, I did find a couple of minor bugs which have now been corrected.

// Summary of steps taken to parse a PDF doc for its page count :-
// (Who'd have thought it'd take about 1000 lines of code to do that!?)
////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

//1. See if there's a 'Linearization dictionary' for easy parsing.
//    Mostly there isn't so ...
//2. Locate 'startxref' at end of file
//3. get 'xref' offset and go to xref table
//4. depending on version the xref table may or may not be in a compressed
// stream. If it's in a compressed stream (PDF ver 1.5+) then getting the
// page number requires a LOT of code which is too convoluted to summarise
// here. Otherwise it still requires a moderate amount of code ...
//5. parse the xref table and fill a list with object numbers and offsets
//6. handle subsections within xref table.
//7. read 'trailer' section at end of each xref
//8. store 'Root' object number if found in 'trailer'
//9. if 'Prev' xref found in 'trailer' - loop back to step 3
//10. locate Root in the object list
//11. locate 'Pages' object from Root
//12. get Count from Pages.
